History:

On September 18, 2006 the City Council adopted a comprehensive environmental Green City Action Plan (GCAP) based on 21 specific actions identified in the United Nations Green Cities Declaration and Urban Environmental Accords (UEA).

The Green City Action Plan identifies specific initiatives for improving urban design, water and air quality, traffic congestion, waste reduction, parks and open space, energy conservation and environmental health.

The progressive action plan was developed by an interdepartmental “Green Team” which was formed at the beginning of 2006. Upon adoption of the Green City Action Plan, the City Manager directed the Green Team to continue as a standing staff committee to monitor progress, ensure completion of the sustainability initiatives, and to provide support to the newly formed Environmental Advisory Commission.

Green Team Mission:

The Green Team will monitor progress, provide information and ensure the completion of the sustainability initiatives of the Green City Action Plan adopted by City Council on September 18, 2006.

Green Team Primary Functions:

  1. The Green Team provides a forum for an open, transparent and participatory dialogue between department representatives on the progress of the sustainability initiatives presented in the Green City Action Plan.

  2. The Green Team seeks the expertise of City staff and outside consultants to achieve the goals of the Green City Action Plan.

  3. The Green Team prepares the Green City Annual Status Report which measures progress towards implementing and achieving the initiatives which may include additions or changes.
